Replacing a phone display (LCD folder / combo)
Combo versus glass-only, the pre-fit test that saves a wasted part, and what to check before you seal the phone.

A "folder" or "combo" is the LCD/OLED and the touch digitiser bonded together as one assembly. Replacing that is a realistic home or shop repair.
Glass-only replacement means separating and re-laminating the panel, which needs a separator, laminator and vacuum. It is not a hand-tool job. If you are not equipped for it, buy the combo — it costs more and saves the panel.

Step by step

A punctured lithium cell at high charge is a fire, not an inconvenience. Run the battery down before you open anything.

Test the new part first
Where the design allows, connect the replacement and power on before removing any adhesive. Check touch across the whole surface, look for dead pixels and backlight bleed. A faulty part found now is returnable; one found after fitting is not.

Heat and separate
Warm the edges evenly to soften the adhesive, then lift with a suction cup and work picks around the perimeter. Go slowly at the flex cable side.

Photograph every screw
Screws in these assemblies are frequently different lengths. A long screw in a short hole punctures the board and ends the repair.

Transfer the small parts
Earpiece mesh, proximity sensor and bracket usually have to move from the old panel to the new one. Check these before sealing — it is the most common reason a repaired phone has no earpiece audio.

Fit fresh adhesive
Reusing the old strip is the usual reason a repaired phone stops being water resistant. Clean the frame with isopropyl alcohol first.

Test everything before sealing
Touch, display, earpiece, proximity (screen should blank on a call), front camera and face unlock.
Common questions
- What is the difference between a combo and glass only?
- A combo is the display and digitiser bonded as one unit — a straight swap. Glass-only means re-laminating a new outer glass onto your existing panel, which requires a separator, laminator and vacuum.
- Can I return a display if it does not fit?
- If it is unfitted and reported within 48 hours, yes. Once a part has been installed or attempted, it cannot be returned — which is why the pre-fit test matters.
- Will my phone still be water resistant?
- Only if fresh adhesive is fitted correctly, and even then the original IP rating is not restored. Treat a repaired phone as splash resistant at best.
